Purolite Tannin Removal Ion Exchange Resin
Purolite Tannin Removal Resin Media is a specialty purpose ion exchange resin designed to remove tannins, organic colour and other naturally occurring organics including organo-metallic complexes such as heme iron from drinking water sources. In areas with organic contamination such as old river beds, shallow wells, boreholes and in downhill areas water source may be contaminated with organics, making a tea like water colour.
How Purolite Tannin Removal Filtration Media works?
Purolite Tannin removal ion exchange water softening resin is intended to be used as an organic trap in a pressure vessel filtration unit in conjunction with other ion exchange processes, such as water softening or demineralization.
Salt is the preferred method for regeneration for reasons of cost and efficiency. When available, sea water can be used as an alternative.
About Purolite Tannin and Organics Reduction Filter Media
Naturally occurring organic matter such as humic, fulvic and tannic acids that are present in water being disinfected can potentially result in the formation of a variety of toxic by-products. These include trihalomethanes (THM) and haloacetic acids (HAA5) as well as bromomethanes and bromate. The levels of THM, HAA5 and bromate are regulated in many countries. In the United States the maximum allowable concentrations are 80 ppb THM, 60 ppb HAA5 and 10 ppb bromate.
For the removal of organic matter from water, collectively known as total organic carbon or TOC, Purolite offers a variety of brine regenerable anion ion exchange resins. The degree of reduction depends on the specific nature of the tannin as well as the selection of resin, its porosity, contact time and resistance to irreversible fouling. As a result, Purolite has a product offering that includes acrylic strong base anion (SBA) macro-porous ion exchange resin, Purolite A860 as well as styrenic SBA macroporous ion exchange resin Purolite A502P. For more difficult-to-treat water that have both colloidal and dissolved TOC, we recommend Purolite Tanex Ion Exchange Resin, a proprietary blend of resins, inclusive of a patented scavenger resin for colloidal particulate matter removal.
Along with organics, an increasing number of raw water supplies are showing higher levels of bromide. The result of disinfecting water supplies containing both organic matter and bromide can potentially lead to the formation of disinfection by-products such as bromomethanes and bromate. Purolite Bromide Plus™/9218 is a proprietary bromide ion selective resin that is regenerable using sodium chloride.
Proper system design is key for good performance in all water purification systems. With the help of Purolites technical experts, we can help custom design the water treatment plant. For example, if the water quality calls for the removal of bromide and organic matter, we recommend using a common regenerant. This simplifies the design while allowing for a reduction in capital and operating costs.
The advantages of Purolite Ion Exchange Resins for Tannin and Organics Removal are
Low operating cost with simple system design, requiring minimum operator attention.
Multiple brine reuses in order to minimize the volume of waste water. Layering of anion resin on top of cation softening resin to help reduce footprint and capital and operating costs.
Multi-contaminant design approach. It is possible for simultaneous removal of organics and bromide with other contaminants.
Excellent resistance to organic fouling
